American Artisan® dog collars are tanned and stained using a mix of bark extracts, leaves, fruit, roots, and oils.
American Artisan® leather dog collars are made using full grain leather that has been vegetable tanned in Igualada, Spain using a 700-year-old leather tanning tradition.
Vegetable tanning is the oldest, most sophisticated and environmentally friendly leather tanning method.
After the tanning process is completed in Spain, the manufacturing of the collars begins in America. From tanning to cutting to beveling to dyeing to oiling to finishing.
It’s all done by hand in small batches following the most traditional leather making techniques. Every unit is unique.
Your leather dog collar is guaranteed for life for material defects and workmanship.
✔️ The leather in American Artisan® dog collars and leashes start their journey in Catalonia Spain where they are vegetable tanned.
✔️ Once in the hands of our artisan, in Pennsylvania, a family tradition of leather handcrafting takes over the manufacturing process.
✔️ From cutting the straps to beveling and slicking down the edges (smoothing) to dyeing (using sheepskin) to oiling (to condition and preserve) to finishing, it is all craftily done one collar and leash at a time. All by hand.
✔️ It’s a labor-intensive process that requires passion, attention to detail, expertise and above all love and pride for traditional leather making.
✔️ The result? Sleek, elegant, rustic, durable, and timeless unique handcrafted masterpieces your dog (and you) will enjoy for years to come.
✔️ Every piece is exclusively manufactured in small batches for toe beans®.
✔️ Is it even made of bovine hides? How is it tanned? Does it contain toxins or heavy metals? Are they the output of forced labor camps overseas? We believe you should know these answers before you buy anything leather.
✔️ Unlike many “leather” dog collars in the marketplace today, boasting baseless “premium” leather quality (oftentimes touted as Italian), American Artisan leather comes from Igualada, Barcelona.
✔️ Leather tanning in Igualada dates to the 14th century.
✔️ Our supplier, Splenda, has been veg tanning leather for almost a century.
✔️ The leather in American Artisan® dog collars and leashes is the result of more than 700 years of a leather tanning craft that has passed from parents to children in the Catalonia region of Spain.
✔️ Depending on the location of the cut, leather can be classified as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade leather.
✔️ 1st grade is the highest quality leather.
✔️ These hides are often referred to as "double bends," which are essentially both sides of the back of the animal. It is the most durable, has the best appearance and is the most expensive part of the hide.
✔️ American Artisan’s dog collars and leashes are made from 1st grade bridle Spanish bovine hides.
✔️ Bridle leather is a type of leather developed for animal harnesses. It’s a veg-tanned leather that has extra oils put into it to make it more weather resistant. It also has an ultra-smooth appearance.
✔️ Oftentimes pet parents find it confusing to choose between made with “full grain” vs “top grain” vs “genuine” leather.
✔️ Unfortunately, many pet parents will tend to choose what sounds better: “genuine” leather. This is something that many overseas manufacturers of mass-produced low-quality dog leather products have capitalized on for decades: praying on the unsuspecting and uninformed pet parent.
✔️ Don’t fall for marketing gimmicks, the truth is genuine leather is the lowest quality leather. It's what's left over after high end products are made with full and top grain leather.
✔️ Always pick full grain leather if you are looking for the highest quality.
✔️ American Artisan® dog collars and leashes are made using only Spanish bridle full grain leather.
✔️ In line with our mission to improve the lives of every fur family member via high-quality planet and health nurturing products, we manufacture our American Artisan's® line of leather dog accessories with vegetable tanned leathers only.
✔️ Veg tanning is the world’s most environmentally friendly tanning method.
✔️ Veg tanning takes longer, and is therefore more costly.
✔️ Due to the presence of natural tannins, vegetable tanned products look better with age.
✔️ Patina is what happens when leather ages gracefully.
✔️ This graceful aging process is entirely unique to natural products. This doesn’t happen with products made with “genuine” leather.
✔️ Start by measuring your dog's neck. Make sure to measure where you would like the collar to sit.
✔️ Use a soft and flexible tape measure. Avoid metal or rigid options.
✔️ The tape measure should fit very snug around your dog’s neck. Do not leave any slack. Our collar sizes are designed to account for the lack of slack when measuring.
✔️ Avoid using your dog’s current collar as a base for measurement.
✔️ The smallest and largest neck sizes our collars fit are 12 ½” and 23 ½” respectively.
✔️ Use the table to the right to pick the right size. For example, if your dog’s neck circumference is 17”, then your dog’s collar size is medium.
✔️ Contact us for neck measurements that fall between two sizes. For example, if your dog’s neck circumference is 16 ½’ or 19 ½”.
✔️ Just like your own skin, leather ages as it's exposed to the elements, and it can get thirsty, so to speak.
✔️ Conditioning your American Artisan® leather dog accessories will ensure they retain their refined look and elegance for decades to come.
✔️ Condition at least once a year. If the collar gets wet frequently, condition it more often, as frequent wetting will tend to dry out the leather.
✔️ Feel free to use your preferred leather conditioning product. However, we highly recommend simply applying natural oils such as coconut oil. Alternatively, you can use our Momma Knows Best® USDA certified organic leather conditioner.
✔️ To apply oils (or our MKB conditioner), start by cleaning the leather surface.
✔️ Apply the oil/conditioner in circular motions using a soft cloth. Let the leather soak in the oil for a few hours.
✔️ Lastly buff the leather with a clean cloth to remove any excess oil.
