Are you frustrated with all cat grass growing kits available in the marketplace today being:
1. Cheap looking and not blending well with your décor whether fancy or basic.
2. Messy and impractical dripping all over the place.
3. Made with single-use plastic components such as disposable plastic potting containers that not only end up in landfills killing our flora and fauna but also leach microplastics into the grass you are supposedly feeding your cat for wellness and enrichment.
4. Made overseas and likely contain all sorts of toxic materials such as lead or other heavy metals common in imported ceramics, wood, and other potting supplies.
If you answered yeah, yeah, yeah, and heck yeah! MKB's cat grass growing kits are for you! Keep on reading below.
✔️ No-drip, No-mess: MKB kits don't drip. Unlike other cat grass growing kits, MKB kits are designed with your cat and your furniture in mind.
✔️ USDA Certified Organic Seeds: MKB’s proprietary blend of cereal seeds are USDA certified organic. If it doesn’t carry the USDA seal, it may not even be organic.
✔️ OMRI Approved Potting Soil: Offer your cat the ultimate organic experience.
✔️ FDA Food Safe Growing Glass Container: Free from microplastics, lead, and other harmful substances.
✔️ Sustainably Sourced American Hardwoods Planter Holders: Available in red oak or FSC certified cherry wood. Unlike unsightly plastic alternatives, Our US-made sleek and refined planter holders will add a touch of rustic elegance while keeping your home looking tidy.
✔️ Only the USDA certified organic seal ensures products bearing it are free of toxic substances used in traditional agricultural practices today.
✔️ Many sellers indiscriminately slap the word organic on everything they sell.
✔️ To protect your beloved cat, make sure to feed your cat USDA certified organic cat grass. Avoid widespread misleading uses of the word organic such as “organic” cat grass, or “organically grown” cat grass.
✔️ Don’t fall for the dangerous and pervasive organic-ism marketing gimmicks. When in doubt, ask the seller for proof of their USDA certificate. The specific product name should be listed in it.
✔️ Momma Knows Best Organics® cat grass undergoes very strict approval and annual compliance requirements enforced by the USDA to maintain the certification.
✔️ If it doesn’t carry the USDA certified organic seal on the front of the product package, your cat grass may not even be organic at all. Which means high odds of exposure to fertilizers, pesticides, heavy metals, and other harmful substances.
✔️ OMRI is an independent non-profit organization that assesses the suitability of various input products, such as livestock feed, fertilizers, and pesticides, for organic production.
✔️ OMRI ensures that the products used in growing organic crops meet authentic organic standards.
✔️ OMRI approved soil is free of fertilizers and pesticides commonly used in traditional agriculture.
✔️ Non-OMRI soil is likely to contain harmful chemicals.
✔️ Growing your USDA organic cat grass seeds with regular soil only adds back the toxins you intended to avoid by using organic seeds.
✔️ Your cat is likely to ingest little pieces of soil when s/he nibbles on or plays with cat grass.
✔️ To protect your cat from harmful substances, it's best to use OMRI-approved soil.
✔️ Cat grass is a blend of several grass seeds, usually wheat, oat, rye, and/or barley.
✔️ It's a great source of supplemental nutrients, vitamins, trace minerals, and fiber.
✔️ Cat grass is a great healthy snack for indoor cats.
✔️ Most cats enjoy nibbling on grass so cat grass is a great form of environmental enrichment for indoor cats.
✔️ Generally, your cat will get the most nutritional value from cat grass between the first and third week of the original sprouting. After that cat grass will start to wilt or yellow, at which point it's time to start a new cycle.
✔️ Not to be confused with catnip, cat grass is from the grain family whereas catnip is from the mint family.
✔️ Most cat grass growing kits are made with either plastic or ceramic components, both typically produced overseas.
✔️ Plastic containers invariably contain toxic chemical additives that leach into the soil and are absorbed by the grass.
✔️ Many of these additives, particularly in the plasticizer categories, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have been found to cause adverse health effects including endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and cancer.
✔️ Overseas-made ceramic options are also widely known to contain harmful toxins, including lead.
✔️ MKB's cat grass glass potting containers are the safe choice for your indoor cat's grass needs: clean, toxin-free, lead-free, BPA-free, FDA food-safe, and made in the USA.
✔️ For all other household plants, regular containers are generally safe to use.
✔️ Start by soaking 1 tablespoon of MKB seeds for 4-8 hours.
✔️ Put ½ an OMRI soil puck per MKB’s glass planter in a bowl.
✔️ Add ¼ cup of water to hydrate and expand.
✔️ Sprinkle your hydrated seeds on top.
✔️ Cover seeds with a thin layer of soil.
✔️ Cover the seeds with a moist paper towel and spritz regularly until grass is about ¼” tall (about 3 days after planting.
✔️ Uncover your seeds and move to a sunny place.
✔️ Spritz as needed until grass is about 4-5” tall.
✔️ Place your vase in the wood planter and delight your kitty!
✔️ Plants need natural light: Cat grass is no exception. Keep your cat grass in or near a sunny spot.
✔️ Water: Use the spritz bottle included in your kit to spritz your grass two or three times a week. Aim the spritz at the roots and not so much to the grass itself. Water in the mornings; avoid watering in the evening or at night.
✔️ White Mold: Your cat grass may grow some white mold in the roots. It's normal and totally harmless to you and your cat. Moving your plant to a window where it gets direct sunlight may help. Otherwise, you can ignore it.
✔️ Black Mold: While unusual, the conditions in your home may lend themselves to the growth of some black mold. In this case, it's time to dispose of the grass and start a new round of planting.
✔️ Trimming: Depending on how much your cat nibbles on the grass, it may get a little long and saggy. Simply clip off the limp portions until the grass reaches a nice spiky shape. You can then add the clippings as a yummy food topper to your cat’s next meal! Make sure the clippings are around a ¼”.
✔️ Life cycle: With proper care, your MKB’s cat grass will look healthy, yummy, and peppy for about 2-3 weeks. After that, it’s time to start a new cycle.
Just like with any other treat, your cat's grass consumption should be supervised. If your cat tends to regularly indulge in cat grass, keep the plant off limits and regulate consumption by clipping the tips and adding them to a little bowl, or directly onto your cat's food.
Cats lack the enzymes to digest cat grass. So instinctually, researchers hypothesize, they may consume it to induce vomiting and clear out indigestible stuff such as fur from their systems.
Cat grass needs plenty of sunlight to grow and thrive. Make sure your cat grass receives direct sunlight.
Look for cat grass seeds that have been grown in the US without pesticides or fertilizers. Generally, USDA-certified organic cat grass grown in the USA is the best grass you can give your cat. Such cat grass products carry the USDA-certified seal on the product packaging.
