Cat Obsession With Toilet: A Funny Tail from our Fur Baby

Have you ever noticed how your fur baby likes to drink out of the toilet?

I’ve always been grossed out by the bacteria (not to mention the harsh chemicals that are used for cleaning) being ingested by my fur babies.

To avoid this whole issue, we are a “close the bathroom door” or “keep the lid down” kind of family.

The kitties know this policy and in “their bathroom,” the toilet is used as a ladder to access the sink where meal prep time takes place. The routine looks something like this:

1) Kitties meow incessantly acting as if they are starving.

2) Simultaneously:

  • Meowmy collects the empty kitty dishes and sits them on the sink.
  • Beany hops onto the toilet and up onto the sink in anticipation of the wet food can opening.
  • Sosa cries as she paces around my feet.

3) Next, Meowmy opens the wet food and fights to fill the bowls while Beany insists on getting started.

4) Finally, Meowmy moves bowls to kitty eating area for the remainder of the meal to be consumed by Beany and for Sosa to finally get started.

Ok, so I deviated from toilet water to food simply to explain that this routine happens consistently twice a day, every day. It’s our routine.

I don’t really have to think about it, I go through the motions naturally including ensuring meds are given and supplements are added to their food. The kitties perform their routine flawlessly and usually everything goes without a hitch.

Well it was one dreaded morning that I went into the bathroom with the kitty dishes where I was welcomed with some stomach bile on the tile floor. I grabbed some toilet paper, wiped it up and threw it in the toilet.

Do you see where this is going? Without consideration Beany jumped up onto the toilet and the lid was still up! She went right into the bowl, into the water and as she tried to get out she began splashing toilet water everywhere!

It was only a matter of seconds before I grabbed her and saved her from the toilet monster, but she was soaked, I was disgusted and wet and the entire bathroom needed to be sanitized!

Now, picture me chasing down a wet cat who was clearly very stressed over what had just happened; it wasn’t pretty.

After my guilt passed (after-all I was the one who lifted the lid) and I was able to get everything cleaned up, I finally had a little chuckle over the situation.

If only I could have caught that on camera! Here we are several months later and to this day the routine has only been modified ever so slightly.

Now, before jumping full energy onto the toilet ladder, Beany’s paws go up and she pauses ever so slighted to ensure the lid is closed, lol. Who said cats aren’t smart???

Is your fur baby obsessed with the toilet? Have you ever had any accidental toilet baths?
